Nguyen Xuan Tiep (born 1956) is a graduate of the Fine Arts University of Hanoi. Tiep burst onto the Vietnamese art scene in the 1990s during Doi Moi, and exhibited actively abroad, receiving gallerists' and collectors' attention and accolades. However he subsequently stopped painting to concentrate on his government job at the Vietnam Fine Art Museum, rising to the position of deputy director of the museum. Only in the last few years did Tiep returned to painting again.

This 1994 work is a good example of Tiep's early works and showed the strong influence of modernist Nguyen Tu Nghiem on Tiep and others during this period.
