Cheong Soo Pieng was one of the Singapore artists closely associated with the Nanyang style of painting. He was a driving force in the development of modernism in the nation's art history and influenced a generation of Singapore artists. Soo Pieng was a very versatile artist who experimented in many mediums ranging from Chinese ink to Western oil painting including even relief artwork using found materials. A large collection of his works can be found in the Singapore National Art Gallery. The artist's works appear regularly in art auctions in Hong Kong, and are well sought after by collectors.
The current work came from a collection in Australia, and was originally sold by the then Norma Lu Gallery in Singapore.
