Nguyen Gia Tri (1908 to 1993) is the undisputed master of Vietnamese lacquer paintings. Tri studied at the L'Ecole des Beaux-Arts L'Indochina in the 1930s and was credited for turning lacquer painting from a decorative handicraft to a means of artistic expression. He influenced a generation of Vietnamese lacquer painters. Not surprisingly, his works can be found in many major museums in Asia.

Tri often does preparatory sketches and drawings for his lacquer works. This rather abstract drawing of a woman, a favourite subject of his lacquer paintings, is one such works.
